On 31 January 2017, in the hotel Radisson Blu Iveria the Biological Farming Association “Elkana” is holding a public presentation of the outcomes of the agricultural co-operatives’ study. The study was carried out in August-October 2016 within the framework of the project “Promoting Inclusive Horticultural Value Chains in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Moldova” financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).The lead organization of the project is the National Federation of Agricultural Producers from Moldova (AGROinform).
The event participants will be welcomed by officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Agricultural Cooperatives Development Agency of, and representatives of the IFAD. The meeting will be attended by representatives of the EU Delegation, Government of Georgia and non-governmental organizations, as well as agricultural experts.
As in other post-Soviet countries, in Georgia joint activities and initiatives farmers are one of the most realistic ways of overcoming poverty and enhancing access of farmers’ products on the market. One of the objectives of the project is to study the ways of effective use of co-operation for developing inclusive horticultural value chains in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Moldova. Accordingly, the objective of the study was the collection of valuable information and analytical material to develop recommendations, the learning and policy documents on co-operation of agricultural producers in the country.
The Biological Farming Association “Elkana” is a non-governmental organization, which was founded in 1994. The main lines of activity of the organization are the development of organic agriculture, agrarian biodiversity conservation, support of rural tourism and agricultural cooperation. Within the framework of different projects and three consortia of the ENPARD Programme “Elkana” is working on the development of more than 60 agricultural cooperatives, which implies the upgrading of skills of cooperative members, the organizational development of cooperatives, the introduction of modern technologies and technical equipment.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion and the participants will be given a chance to express their opinions around the issues identified by the study.
